Do you ever look at what someone has gotten themselves into and think, "I'd never do that!" You may have a blind spot when it comes to your own shadowy side or it may be true that you'd never do such a thing, but it's also likely that the other person would never make the mistakes you make.

Have you ever considered that their temperament and yours can be a huge part of your tendencies to fall into  vastly different traps?

 

In truth, people sin predictably! They sin in line with their inborn design because that design contains a pattern of strengths, needs, and vulnerabilities. Strengths in overdrive, unmet core needs, and unguarded weaknesses are equally likely to be our downfall.

 

We ought to know ours in order to step around the traps. And when we know the vulnerabilities of those we love, we can encourage them to be careful in particular areas, we can shield them by nurturing their souls, and if they fall anyway, we can lovingly help them up without judging their fall against our own.

 

Some are more prone to pride and revenge than others, while a particular personality type struggles with lust, gluttony, and excess more than the rest. Another group can be controlling, divisive, and self-righteous, while a fourth kind can be irresponsible or self-centered.

 

A good coach knows to help themselves and their clients be aware of the chink in their armor, parents benefit from knowing what to focus on in parenting, and pastors can shepherd their flock more intelligently when they know what the wolf is coming after in each sheep's life.
